    Changing woofers for Mirage M490

    Hello all,

I wanted to replace the M490 woofers after one was accidentally damaged. I ordered replacement woofers from partsexpress that seem to fit the dimensions and impedance but when I tried to remove the old woofers they seem to be glued in place.

I would appreciate any tips on how to proceed in removing the old woofer.

Also I have a question on the kind of insulation is it used internally? Is it fiberglass and what kind of protection do I need when handling it?

    Thank you for your help!

Re: Changing woofers for Mirage M490

    Hi there

There should be a soft foam ring around the woofer which should come off easily. Under this is 4 or 8 phillips screws. Carefully pry the woofer out with a slot screw driver or make a pulling tool from a piece of stiff wire wrapped around a small block of wood for a handle and bend it 90° in a vise. Cut the end to 1/8" and file it down so it fits under the woofer where the screws were. Carefully pull up and the woofer should come out.

The insulation within the speaker is likely fibreglass so wear gloves and a dust mask and maybe even do the work outside to keep the dust down. Don't move the fibreglass material around as it's position should not have shifted after all these years.

    Good luck
