Hi 3fiddy,
Is the wire two conductor speaker type wire? Like one in each speaker location?
If so then you are ready to go. Try to locate the other ends to see if they are in the area where you plan on putting your receiver. If things were done correctly you should have at least 5 pairs of wires going from the central receiver location to the left, right, centre, and 2 surround ( rear) speaker locations. You may only have the surround speakers wires pre-intalled so that may mean only two sets of wires.
You can identify each set with a multimeter set to the "ohms" scale and then strip the insulation off of each wire. Join the two wires at the desired speaker location (one set at a time) and measure a "short" circuit at the receiver location. Once you are all done identifying wires each set of wires, remember to keep the wires separated again so there are no short circuits in the system.
Always connect the speakers first! Make sure there are no stray filaments betewen the speaker binding post connectors!
Always do any connections with the receiver OFF!!!
If you see more than one set of wires, multiple conductors then you may not have speaker wire but something else?
Good Luck!
