I'm using an S8 subwoofer fresh out the box and it's humming even without a speaker cable connected.  Any tips on how to get rid of the hum or this a faulty unit?

If the hum is very noticable and you experience it without the speaker cables connected then there might be something wrong with the unit.  If you bought it from a local dealer, maybe you can have him check it out...otherwise I would give customer service a call.  They are great and will help you out.

Another issue that could be causing this hum may be electical, known as ground loop, and may not be the fault of the unit at all. I experienced this when I purchased an S12 a few years back, but since I lived in an apartment at the time I couldn't mess with the wiring so I had to return it. If you do an internet search on ground loop you may be able to get some tips on how to remedy it fairly easily.

I got the same problem with my 3 year old S8 subwoofer (started approx. 6 months ago) and it´s getting louder. I think sound comes from the transformer inside subwoofer. It´s not a ground loop, because it makes the sound even without signal cables and stops only it the main power is switched off.

I guess the quality is not very good in this model. Unfortunately manufacturer gives 12 month guarantee so I might start use it as a paper weight pretty soon.
