2 or 1... that is the question ....

    Hi all,

I have this question that has me stumped....

I feed a PS-12-90 sub with this little fella...

nothing but sweet sweet sweet LFE...

my only problem is... I have noticed when I pass a single wire to my sub...it doesn't seem to play as loud or accurately...

but when I use a Y splitter from my single sub output and feed both inputs on the sub ....the beast awakens...I have to turn it way...WAY down...

    is this normal ?

why do some experts say a single wire is sufficient ?

is it because of my sub's ancient technology ?

    anybody have any input ?

    2 or 1 ?

that's the one I really want to know....

    thanks ahead...

I looked at a schematic once of these subs and was told that if you connect both of the inputs on the sub the signals are fed into 2 inputs within the input op-amp. This provides 3dB more output and explains why your sub "awakens". This is not ancient technology simply this sub was designed before the 5.1 sub outs found on receivers over the past few years.

BTW  adding 3dB is equal to twice as loud.

Keep this in mind when comparing regular speakers' efficiency: a speaker rated at 91 dB 1w/1m is twice as loud as one rated as 89 dB 1w/1m.

This of course is assuming that the manufacturers' measurements have not been fudged for marketing purposes etc.

Don't ever judge a speaker by efficiency differences anyway. More efficiency in the system may have been designed into the speaker at the expense of extended bass response and overall fidelity. Most receiver/amplifiers these days can easily supply enough output to make any speaker "rock" even an 86 dB rated set. Listen then buy!!

    Thanks for the info Ottig...

    that explains all....

My M-290s are rated at 86 db...and I must say the rated 65 watts per channel from my Outlaw seems & sounds  like a great match...

    solely based upon my ears...

    and for the sub...well...

    I've read elsewhere...

    some like hot...
